A family with a chain of restaurants and a local high profile was subjected to severe online trolling on Snapchat. Numerous posts featuring their restaurants and family members contained serious false allegations of assault and abuse, causing significant emotional distress and financial impact on their businesses. To address this issue, IMSL was approached to conduct a thorough investigation.

Identifying the Source of Abuse

Our investigation began by scrutinising the username and profile picture used on Snapchat. This led us to link the Snapchat account to a Facebook account created with anonymous details. Despite the anonymity, we employed advanced investigative techniques to uncover the true identity behind the account. Our methods included:

  • Image Analysis: Identifying and analyzing imagery posted on Facebook, even those not on the individual’s timeline.
  • Geolocation Matching: Using Street View to match images with real-world locations, allowing us to pinpoint the likely address of the perpetrators.

Collaborating with Law Enforcement

Once we identified the individuals responsible, we reported our findings to local law enforcement. The evidence suggested violations under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997, the Malicious Communications Act 1988, and the Communications Act 2003. Key steps included:

  • Evidence Submission: Presenting our detailed findings and supporting evidence to the authorities.
  • Legal Framework: Highlighting the relevant laws under which the perpetrators could be prosecuted.

Impact of Our Investigation

Our intervention had a significant positive impact on the affected family and their businesses. Key outcomes included:

  • Law Enforcement Action: The perpetrators were dealt with by local law enforcement, and the harmful material was removed from social media.
  • Emotional Relief: The family experienced relief from the emotional distress caused by the online abuse.
  • Business Recovery: The removal of defamatory content helped mitigate the financial damage to their businesses.
